History of this scholarship program:
Barney Bernard was a respected insurance man in the University District and served in University Kiwanis for many years as President, then Secretary, and later as our division Lt. Governor. To say he was beloved by his fellow Kiwanians would be an understatement.
After his passing in 1982, University Kiwanis Foundation established the Hugh C. “Barney” Bernard Scholarship in 1984 to provide tuition assistance to students in the University of Washington School of Business. The Dean of the UW School of Business helped select winners for the $1,000 scholarship based on scholastic merit, financial need, good standing as students, and other relevant factors.
In 1990, University Kiwanis Club began sponsoring the UW Circle K Club and a year later, repurposed the Bernard Scholarship to provide tuition assistance to active UW Circle K members. Winners for the scholarships are selected by a committee comprised of the University Kiwanis President, Secretary and Circle K Advisor.
In 2001, the scholarship was renamed the Bernard/Orr scholarship to celebrate the legacy of Jack Orr, former Dean of the UW School of Pharmacy and University Kiwanis member from 1957 to 2001, in which he served as President (1963) and 23 years as Secretary (1978 – 2001).
